Mme. C.J. Walker’s Beauty Shoppe Museum

54 Hilliard Street NE

Atlanta, GA 30312

54 Hilliard is home to a museum and event space dedicated to preserving, honoring, and celebrating two African-American business pioneers and the legacy of entrepreneurialism, social activism, philanthropy, music, and beauty they left behind. This is a special, almost sacred space. There’s an ineffable “vibe” you feel as soon as you cross the threshold into this humble yet inspiring space, especially after you learn about the people who were involved here.

Visit the Museum

The museum is in two parts. One is dedicated to the memory of Madam C. J. Walker, whose hair and cosmetics products company had a beauty shop franchise at this location. The second part is dedicated to the legacy of WERD, the first black-owned and operated radio station in America, founded in 1949. The WERD Studio museum includes more than 15,000 jazz, blues, gospel, and other records, affectionately dubbed the “Great Wall of Vinyl,” as a tribute to the gift of music WERD gave to Atlanta.

Admission to the museum is by appointment, so contact us to arrange a date and time for your visit. There is charge of $5 per person. Additional donations are appreciated. WERD merchandise is also available for purchase.
